Sugar Bowl is a nice little gem of a place that should keep you amused for a few days, but it should be pointed out that this place can become a little crowded over holiday periods etc - but that's to be expected from any Lake Tahoe resorts. The terrain is evenly split over three main areas that are connected, Lincoln, Mt Judah, and Mt Disney. Lincoln and Mt Disney offer some of the most testing runs with a cool selection of black trails and a couple of double black diamonds. Mt Judah has the most sedate terrain and best for beginners and intermediates. The resort offers base facilities where you can get snowboard hire.
Although we wouldn't recommend a full weeks riding here, it's certainly a great ski area to visit for a day or three. And combined with other Lake Tahoe ski resorts, especially after fresh snow, Sugar Bowl should fit nicely into a 7 day+ trip to the area.
The Sugar Bowl Resort is the closest major ski area to Sacramento and the Bay Area, so it gets pretty busy over the weekends. However compared to some of its high profile neighbours in Lake Tahoe, Sugar Bowl is more often overlooked & subsequently benefits from a less crowded experience.
Walt Disney himself made the initial invest into the resort, yet luckily, there’s nothing Disney-esque about the ski area. That said it's also not at all old fashioned, but rather a reasonably well developed ski resort with some modern lifts, excellent grooming and even some ok terrain parks.
