Wengen / Michael Whittaker
Switzerland has a reputation of been expensive but Wengen does not have the lofty prices of other areas such as Verbier, Generally speaking a beer will set you back around 4/5 Francs and various happy hours offer 2 for 1 in the early evening. There are a range of restaurants around the town where you can get traditional Swiss fare. The town also has a well stocked coop so self catering is an option.
On the slopes a variety of food can be found 15-20 francs will get a simple but a hearty main meal. Eating out around town visitors will find a good mixture of Modern and Traditional Swizz restaurants that are well worth a visit, with good quality locally produce food.
There are a variety of Hotels around Wengen with many located in close proximity to the ‘Wengen’ railway station. The 4 star Silberhorn provides an ideal base for a first-class relaxing break in the centre of Wengen, close to the mountain railway and the Mannlichen cable car. The bedrooms are spacious and well equipped, most with a magnificent view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Excellent quality restaurant with afternoon tea and weekly themed meals included, recently constructed spa area with saunas, steam room and whirlpool, massage available at an extra charge; lounge with open log fire and a cosy public bar and sun terrace. Crystal Ski (www.crystalski.co.uk) offers a week’s stay at the four-star Finest Hotel Silberhorn in Wengen from £998 including flights from Gatwick to Geneva, transfers, half board, afternoon tea, use of all facilities the hotel offers as well as access to the airport lounge at Gatwick. Further information on Wengen and the surrounding area can be found on the My Switzerland website.
The Rock Bar offers regular Quiz Nights and Crystal Bar is good for watching sports of having some Après Ski Fun. However Wengen is definitely not a party town and the streets can be quite quiet on an evening.
