Scuol

In the winter Scuol markets itself as a Spa and Ski town which is perfect for short breaks and week long trips. It is well worthwhile visiting the Engiadina Scuol Health and Bathing Centre which offers open air pools, therapies and wellness treatments rooms. The Roman-Irish massages offer a sure fire way to relax those aching muscles. Some hotel packages include the spa pass for free so it is worth checking for this beforehand, the Hotel Belvedere also has private walkway to the spa for guests.

Elsewhere in the resort you will find a mixture of old and new buildings that make for a pretty town centre. The resort caters for a number of other activities, especially during late season, including white-water rafting and mountain biking. The fun park offers a number of training camps throughout the season as well as local competitions.

As well as a number of traditional restaurants serving authentic Swiss food, you can also enjoy modern alternatives including a Thai restaurant ‘Nam Thai’ which is situated above the spa.

There are many restaurants dotted around the resort and within the hotels. Restaurants can vary vastly in price, so be careful to budget for this. Food on the slopes and off can be a very expensive compared to countries such as Austria, so it’s not a resort for those on a tight budget.

On the slopes you’ll find a mixture of Grilled chicken and rib shacks, a decent meal costs 15-20 Francs and you should expect to pay about 6 Francs for a beer.

Scoul offers accommodation of all types ranging from family run guest houses, apartments and bigger hotels such as the Belvedere which offers ski and wellness packages.

The town has many old beautiful buildings where you can stay and also a number of new builds, which blend together to create a nice mixture of old and new.

Schoul has some nice bars in town and dotted around the slopes, however many of these shut no later than 2am, so those looking for exciting nightlife will probably be disappointed. Mar-Mota at the base station provides a lively place for Après-Ski and holds regular snowboard contests to watch while having a drink.

Higher up the mountain is the Chammanna Nalums bar which provides spectacular views of the mountain and down into the valley. If you do choose to enter a nightclub you’re advised to ask the entry price as this alone can be quite expensive.

Typically a large beer on the slopes will come to about 6 francs which is roughly about £5. Although if you’re feeling adventurous Switzerland does some very nice liquors, that are well worth a try.
