The Nax Region may sometimes get overshadowed by its bigger Valais siblings but trust us it's a little hidden gem.
6/10
Nax is a place to lay back, surround yourself by nature and relax, it's a quiet family oriented area. Set in a tranquil village setting you are more likely to hear church bells than any apres ski sounds.
The houses are traditionally swiss dating back hundreds of years and well worth a wander around. There are a range of good accommodation options for all.
The Hôtel Mont-Noble a traditional hotel, offers views of the church. Rooms were cosy and the restaurant downstairs was a great place to sample some local drinks and dishes especially the local steak if you are a meat eater. From here there is a ski bus up to Nax that runs occasionally throughout the day. TO make getting around easier enquire at the local tourism office around renting the pay what you want electric car. A great idea for those who want to travel in a more eco friendly manner.
In town there is also a large supermarket for those wanting to go down the self catering route. Inside you will also find a baker and a hairdressers, if you fancy a trim whilst in the mountains.
For those wanting something more thrilling there is also a via ferrata for those with a head for heights. This has been carefully constructed to avoid the nesting eagles who are not so keen on it.
If you want to see views of the whole valley there is also a spectacular viewing platform which is well worth walking too.
If you're spending some time in Nax Region then there are only a couple of options on the mountain itself for food. The La Dzorniva restaurant has plenty of options to suit all budgets and is reasonably priced in general. With a self service section you can get a good selection of sandwiches or a dish of local cheese, meats and bread.
Fast food such as hot dogs and frites are also served for those in a budget. Or if you fancy something more substantial they do a great selection of fondues. If it's a bluebird day the restaurant also has a nice terrace to sit out on and soak up the sun. The restaurant Chiesso is the other alternative if you want to eat on the slopes.
On an evening if you head to the Mont-Noble hotel there is a great little restaurant where we ate the local beef which you can continue to cook yourself or just leave it as it is if you like your beef rare. The bar also had some great local wines and beers. If you are in this region you really need to try the local delights.
Nax has a number of self catering options as well as the hotel Mont-Noble. This hotel is traditionally swiss and has some fab views over to the church and the centre of town. Further accommodation options can be found on the Nax region website.
If you stay in either Mase or Vernamiège there are also other options such as the Cure of Vernamiège B&B.
Nax is not a place to head for apres ski but all of the bars and restaurants have a good selection of beers from the region that are well worth trying. One of the great things about the Valais Wallis region is the exceptional range of local produce.
