Bjorkliden is an area which is unknown to many Europeans but ask a Scandinavian and the answer will be different. The area is 250km above the arctic circle and was founded in 1902 when it was opened as an area for R&R for the navvies working on the railway into Norway. The resort has recently changed hands and the new owners have ploughed money into the resort and it is all looking good and will get even better. What’s on offer is pretty much same as its close neighbour Riksgrannsen, a railway station, a hotel complex and the ski slope. But what this area has which you will find hard to beat is the other snow activities: heli-boarding, skidoo hire, cat skiing, ice fishing and backcountry guides. The terrain on offer is awesome with something for all abilities. Also another bonus is that Bjorkliden don’t open their lifts until mid Feb so you are guaranteed a fair amount of snow, so no rock hoping. The beauty of Bjorkliden is the railway which is on your door step. Trains run from Stockholm and carry on through to Riksgrannsen (40min) or across the border into Norway and Narvik.
