RIP Estelle Balet - FWT Champion Snowboarder
FWT champion Estelle Balet died in an avalanche while snowboarding in Orsières.
She was filming a movie on Le Portalet in southwestern Switzerland. Despite swift action from emergency services and attendance from Air Glaciers, she died of her injuries. Police say they have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident. “Despite immediate efforts to revive her, she died at the scene,” police said. “An investigation has been started to determine the causes of the accident.”
The FWT issued a statement:
“The Freeride community has experienced a tremendous loss today as we learned that one of the most hopeful young talents and current snowboard World Champion, Estelle Balet, has tragically passed away in an avalanche. The mortal avalanche occurred earlier this morning in the canton of Valais.
“Estelle Balet was a naturally gifted shining star and demonstrated remarkable talent as she quickly became a household name on the Freeride World Tour, bringing home her second title as World Champion just a few weeks ago in Verbier.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Estelle Balet as we send our deepest sympathy and condolences during this very difficult time.”
Balet started skiing early in her childhood. At the age of ten she transitioned from skiing to snowboarding. Displaying fearlessness, Balet used to compare herself with the boys. Having completed the Freeride World qualifier, she entered the Freeride World Tour at the age of eighteen. Balet specialized particularly in switch, frontside 180, frontside 360 and jib.In 2015, Balet became the youngest ever Freeride World Tour champion when she won the women's snowboarding event.
