Introduction
Aomori Spring is one of those resorts that can totally surprise you - assuming you don’t know much about it before you come. So if you enjoy the mystery, take note of the stats above and stop reading now.
Getting to Aomori Spring is easier than you might think. It’s a wonderfully comfortable 3hr journey on the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori Station, then an hour transfer to the resort. Alternatively you can fly into Aomori International Airport, which is the same 1hr transfer time but in a different direction. The resort offers regular transfers to and from the airport, and Shinkansen transfers by request.

Upon arrival, you’ll see the Rockwood Hotel (currently the resort’s only accommodation option), a few lifts and a gondola, and a huge amount of snow… more than likely. If your visit to Aomori Spring is during the months of January or February, there’s a high chance it’ll snow everyday and you may not even see the top lift. However, if you let patience prevail - or you come in March - you’ll be rewarded with a glorious view of Mt Iwaki (Iwaki-San as it’s known in Japanese).
This magnificent looking peak is one of the lesser-known backcountry touring options that Tohoku (the northern area of the main Honshu Island) has to offer. But that’s not the biggest asset this resort has to offer. Here in lies the question… how much do you ride park and pipe?
