Whitewater is located close to the town of Nelson and is a very good bet for riding, even when other resorts are begging for snow. Whitewater receives 1,200cm of snow each winter and due to the area's stable winter temperatures, the snow lasts and lasts. The lifts access some of the best high altitude in-bounds terrain in Canada. Whitewater is a huge bowl, contained by two ridges that join at the apex to form the 2,440m (800 ft) Ymir Peak. Ymir (pronounced 'why-mur') is named after a Norse legend and traps any westerly storm. Water vapour sucked off nearby Kootenay Lake is turned into consistently dry champagne powder that fills the bowl. Admittedly a 'high end' resort, with a majority of expert and intermediate terrain, Whitewater still has a lot of room for those lovers of groomed run cruising with long, easy beginner runs off the Silver Ling lift.
