Hintertux

The base of Hintertux sits at a height of 1,500m at the far end of the Zillertal valley, which is also home to the resorts of Mayrhofen and Eggalm. It now forms part of the Zillertal 3000 area offering 230km of pistes, but Hintertux itself has 68km of marked pistes. Hintertux has a number of advantages and disadvantages: on the plus side, it’s a glacial resort, and apart from being one of the best summer snowboard resorts in Europe, it also has an enviable snow record in winter. However, in winter the same pluses mean that when the lower altitude resorts of the valley are suffering from a lack of snow, Hintertux can become very busy.

Still, the open expanse of freeride terrain provides some excellent powder fields that are seldom tracked out by the morning ski masses. In summer the extent of snow cover over the length of the runs is often more than many resorts get during the winter season. Slopes are always crowd-free and riding in a t-shirt is the norm

Queues can be pretty busy for the Gondola up, however most people tend to forget there’s an older 4 man gondola a short walk beyond the other one. There used to be the same problem getting back down the mountain, however they now have a run down from the top of the TuxerJoch chair to the base. Things start off narrow and pretty flat but soon open out into a great 7km leg burner. When conditions are suitable its also possible to board down from the top of the Sommerbergalm and shred the only trees in the resort.
